Mommy & Me Groups are designed for mothers, fathers, or caregivers and young children between the ages of 1 and 4. The structured small groups feature play time, songs, and stories and are designed to target a number of behavioral objectives. These groups are really designed for typically developing kids and their caregiver to work on some of the typical preschool behaviors that can be challenging, annoying, or concerning for parents. Many kids at this age have difficulty sitting, sharing, separating from an adult, calming down if they get “too silly,” or following directions. Christine Jurik, MA, BCBA, COBA will help parents understand these behaviors and respond in a way that will decrease unwanted behaviors and increase desirable behaviors.
Mommy & Me Groups focus on helping young children develop the following skills:
- Sit for extended periods of time in a small group setting
- Increase appropriate attending skills
- Participate in group instruction
- Increase compliance with teacher instructions
- Increase compliance with parent instructions
- Play cooperatively
- Use words and appropriate tone of voice to request
- Target any individualized target behaviors the parent requests (e.g., aggression with peers, whining instead of using words, separation anxiety)
After each group, children can practice parallel or cooperative play while parents have the chance to “ask the behaviorist” specific questions about challenges they are having with their child’s behavior. These questions might range from “how to potty train” to helping bedtime go more smoothly to managing sibling issues. Parents without questions are also welcome to listen and learn from the recommendations given to other families.
Mommy & Me Groups are currently offered on Tuesdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Each Mommy & Me Group lasts four weeks, with one 60-minute group session per week. Sessions are divided into a 45-minute structured group and a 15-minute “ask the behaviorist” question and answer session.
Each four-week group enrollment is $160.
To enroll your child, call 440.420.1170 or email Christine. If you’re not sure whether your child is a good fit for the group, please contact Christine via e-mail so that she can answer your questions on an individual basis.
